Regeneration in Motion
Regenerative agriculture sounds amazing on paper. But what does it look like in practice?
One of our rooibos partners, Klip op Mekaar of South Africa, is an incredible example of what regenerative practices are all about. Organic from their inception in 2007, they started with minimum till farming and moved to no-till in 2019. They use multispecies cover crops on rotation to replenish and re-balance soils.
Grants from the Yogi Foundation supported the purchase of equipment to make natural compost-based fertilizers, rich in diverse fungal life, that are applied to their fields every spring. These applications help young seedlings develop roots and survive the region’s harsh climate.
Over the last 10 years, they’ve analysed hundreds of soil samples from around their farm. They show that their farming practices are increasing nutrient levels, building organic material, and increasing carbon in soils.
You can see the increase in soil carbon levels on their farm from 2016 to 2024.
These findings, which have been independently validated, confirm that the farm has stored approximately 21,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents in their topsoil over the last seven years. And, since their farm uses a lot of renewable power, including new solar arrays funded by Yogi, when everything is totalled up the farm is carbon negative: they sequester vastly more carbon in their soil than they emit.
Storing carbon like this is one of the most powerful things anybody can do in the fight against climate change.
At the same time, they’ve worked hard to preserve the indigenous plants and animals that live on the 5300 hectares of wilderness mountain land surrounding their 630 hectares of fields. Perhaps most incredibly of all, all this regenerative activity has boosted their rooibos yield by about 50%.
That’s regenerative agriculture in action: fighting climate change, preserving local environments, and providing you with delicious, nutritious rooibos, while benefiting farmers at the same time.
This is why Yogi is so invested in regeneration, and why we talk about it so frequently. We’re determined to ensure the world is better off because we’re in it. Klip op Mekaar’s success shows that regeneration is possible, productive, and thoroughly better for everyone concerned. When we heal the world, we’re all better off. Dedicated farmers like these are doing their part and we’re proud to support them.
